When OCD takes up too much of your day.
OCD can involve unwanted thoughts, images or urges that bring distress, followed by rituals intended to reduce it. Those rituals can be visible, such as checking or washing, or happen in your mind, such as counting or repeatedly reviewing a thought.
When these patterns interfere with your work, relationships or everyday life, you can talk them through with a therapist. You do not need a formal OCD diagnosis to start a conversation at North Point Therapy.
Obsessions
Recurring, unwanted thoughts, images or urges can bring anxiety or doubt. They may involve contamination, harm, uncertainty or a need for things to feel exactly right.
Compulsions
Repeated actions or mental rituals can feel necessary to reduce distress. Checking, washing, counting and repeating words are examples. The relief can be temporary, keeping the cycle going.
How the OCD cycle can keep going.
Compulsions can bring short-term relief, but that relief can reinforce the urge to repeat the ritual. When doubt or distress returns, the cycle can start again.
This shows a common pattern that maintains OCD, not a single cause of the disorder. Experiences vary.
Based on the International OCD Foundation's explanation of OCD.Understanding ERP.
Exposure and Response Prevention is a form of Cognitive Behavioural Therapy (CBT) and a first-line psychological treatment for OCD. It focuses on changing how you respond to distressing thoughts and situations, rather than trying to obtain certainty every time they arise.
ERP is planned collaboratively and approached gradually. It can bring discomfort, so the work involves learning about OCD, identifying your patterns and choosing manageable practice. It is not a promise that anxiety will disappear or that every person will respond in the same way.
Exposure
Practise approaching selected situations, thoughts or images that trigger obsessional anxiety. You and your therapist plan the practice together.
Response prevention
Practise resisting the rituals and avoidance that usually follow the trigger. ERP can also include agreed practice between appointments.

Questions about starting.
Do I need a formal OCD diagnosis to start treatment?
No, you do not need a formal diagnosis from a doctor or psychiatrist to begin work at North Point Therapy. Many adults I work with in my Toronto practice recognize the patterns of OCD—such as intrusive thoughts, "all-or-nothing" thinking, or repetitive mental rituals—long before they ever receive a clinical label.
Do you offer virtual therapy across Ontario?
Yes, North Point Therapy provides virtual psychotherapy services to adults located anywhere in Ontario.
Using a secure, PHIPA-compliant video platform, we can engage in evidence-based work—including CBT, ACT, and Exposure and Response Prevention (ERP)—from the comfort and privacy of your own space. This allows individuals across the province to access OCD and anxiety treatment that may not be available in their local communities.
Eligibility: As a Registered Psychotherapist (RP), I am regulated to practice with clients who are physically located within the province of Ontario at the time of our session.
Technology: All you need is a private space and a stable internet connection. My client portal makes joining your virtual session simple and secure.
What is the cost of therapy?
The cost for therapy is $190 per 50 minute session.
Payment Method: Payment is due at the time of your session and can be made securely via e-transfer or credit card through the client portal.
Insurance Receipts: Following each session, you will receive a detailed receipt that you can submit to your insurance provider for reimbursement, provided your plan covers Registered Psychotherapists in Ontario.
Consultation: I offer a complimentary 15-minute phone consultation to ensure we are a good fit before you commit to a full session.
Are you covered under insurance?
As a Registered Psychotherapist (RP) in Ontario, my services are covered by most extended health benefit plans. While I do not offer direct billing, I provide a detailed receipt after each session that you can submit for reimbursement.
Coverage can vary significantly between providers, so I recommend contacting your insurance company directly to verify that your specific plan includes psychotherapy services provided by a Registered Psychotherapist.
Provider Note: Most major Canadian insurers (such as Sun Life, Manulife, and Canada Life) typically cover RPs, but it is always best to confirm your individual policy's "Psychotherapy" or "Counseling" allowance.
What should I expect in our first session?
Our first session is a structured intake and assessment designed to build a complete picture of your life and current challenges.
During this 50-minute session, we will:
Review Your Background: We’ll discuss your history, including topics such as family background, education, and past mental health support. This context ensures that the strategies we develop are tailored to your specific environment.
Establish Your Goals: We’ll look at how anxiety, OCD, perfectionism, or other concerns are currently impacting your workload and relationships, and develop clear, value-aligned goals for our sessions.
Determine a Path Forward: We’ll identify your specific patterns and decide which evidence-based strategies—such as CBT, ACT, or ERP—are best suited to your treatment plan.
By the end of this meeting, our goal is for you to have a clear roadmap so that we can move directly into the active work of therapy in our following sessions.
